DORMER WINDOWS AND SKYLIGHTS

Dormer windows are upright windows built out from a sloping roof. As these windows are often small, it is important that the treatment does not obscure light. If possible, dress the wall area around the window to make the window appear larger. If space is restricted, then plastic or brass swing arms fitted into the window recess are a sensible solution. They are a neat way to hang curtains inside the recess, and they dress the side wall when not in use. A swing arm pivots from a bracket placed in the corner of the window to lie both against the window and the side wall. Note that the curtains must be double sided as the back of the curtain is visible when the arm is swung open onto the wall.

A skylight is set in the line of the roof or ceiling. Special roller or Roman blind systems with tracking down the sides of the window are used for skylights. These blinds are usually needed to filter sunlight rather than provide privacy.
